Today's Music is Focused On Money and Materialism

An example of materialism in music is Lil Uzi Vert's song Sanguine Paradise, his first line in the song is "We be throwin' money in a spiral."This one line immediately makes the listener visualize an abundance of money being thrown in the air. This may be causing people to be materialistic and money focused subliminally. He mentions the designers Raf Simons and Rick Owens as well as the car brand Rolls Royce when he mentions its car model "Wraith." The effects of name dropping in songs can mean an increased rate of materialism in Gen Z. The subliminal messages can cause people's mindsets to change without even them knowing. I think that this materialism in songs is okay since name dropping designers can appeal to some and it helps brands with sales. Bragging about money and luxurious lifestyles can also help some feel motivated to make it big in life. Another song that is an example of materialism and bragging about money through lyrics is Lil Pump's song Gucci Gang. The song title is clearly titled after a designer which is materialistic right off the bat. The song lyrics really dive into materialism since Lil Pump drops the word Gucci 49 times in the song. Again I think this is okay since he is promoting the brand Gucci by doing this.

  1. I agree because so many artist are dropping songs that reference an abundance of materialistic things. To add on to your idea this is happening as society is constantly moving forward and as society moves forward the music moves with it. Since nowadays people only cares about the materialistic things that someone has and that determines who they are in society. So it seems as though music is merely an identity in itself. Overall well written.

  2. I agree with your ideas and I think that by flaunting money in songs, listeners then feel left out becuase if can't purchase from the highly talked up brands. Although, brand name dropping is good for advertising becuase if people listen to a specific artisit who contantly references a certain brand. Listeners will be more obliged to check the brand out and possibly purchase something. Overall, I think this post is very unique and well written!
